Catbird Quilts has an interesting article on determining if you want to quilt for the public (or at least that is how I read the article)
I had always heard double the cost of materials, but she suggests that it is triple the cost.
Of course, that is probably because I was going off an older version.
This article does tell me why I don't quilt for the public.
I'm happy to do my own quilting and longarming for charity.
The actual cost of a quilt is why I don't give to many auctions.
I many cases, they do not even start the bidding at the cost of materials.
