9 UFO completions

I did OK this month.  I completed 9 of my UFOs.  Now, 3 of those took up one line because they grew, but there were 9 projects finished in January.

My fabric summary -- I decided I would just do a monthly summary.

My goal of reducing my stash by 100 yards didn't do too great this month. I only reduced it by 8.48 yards
I bought 24 yards in January
I actually used 32.48 yards of fabric this month.
I had to buy some backings and some for a special quilt.  Hope I won't be buying much else for awhile.

On to February.  :)

Weekend plans

What's happening this weekend?  It's the first weekend of Girl Scout Cookie Sales.  We have booths on Friday and Saturday, we actually we have 4 booths this weekend that DD and I are manning.  Problems with other girls and illness and availability, so DD and I will man them.  I need to go get money tomorrow, find the money box and the table and off we go!

Sunday is my parent's anniversary, so we will go out after church to lunch with them.  Then, I will be able to go to my small quilt group to deliver cookies and do some sewing.  I have a couple of UFO projects to take with me.  I don't expect to get them done, but they are going to be fun to work with.
1.  Tropical swap blocks.  I need to make one more block and then figure out how to set them.
2.  I have pinwheels that I've sewn the method where you sew around the squares and then cut, trim and assemble.  I need to get those done to be able to get the rest of the quilt put together.  I'm not real excited about this project.
3.  The road quilt is started and the hst have been made.  I need to press, trim and sew them together for one of the borders on this UFO.
4.  Play with Jo's club setting.

Actually, these are all 3 UFOs and it would be fun to get them done and ready to quilt.  I could conceivably get 2 of them to the top stage on Sunday afternoon.  We shall see.

What are you working on?

Very little going on

OK, so I didn't get much done this week.  It was NOT a good week for anything.  :(  So, very little sewing going on.  But, I did go to Red Hats with this group of wonderful ladies.

DD came down with an ear ache and called from school one day this week and I worked on the America the Beautiful applique.  Not sure I like the mountains, but hope they quilt into mountains when the time comes.  LOL
Not really anything else to report.  I need to work on the double wedding ring.  I don't like the background fabric.  It blends too much, so I think I will need to figure something else out.

Last quilt quilted

This is the last of Sandy's quilts.  I really like this one.  What a fun quilt.  She wanted starts quilted on it with red and gold thread.  I was lucky and had a gold/yellow/red/rust variegated thread.  I think it turned out OK.
Some of the detail in the quilting.

DONE 1. Applique block for class.

STARTED 2. Determine how I'm going to set these Jo's blocks. I might just need to make a couple of the Double Irish chain to see how it works. I'm really not sure, so I just need to do something. LOL I have planned out the double Irish chain. I will use the brown and blue variety of prints I have used in the blocks and some others. I will use the background fabric from the squares as the background on the double chain. I will use the 9" block from Jo's retreat as the center of the alternating block. When I run out of those blocks, I will use the background fabric or determine an easier block to use. I doubt I will make more of these blocks.

DONE 3. If Sandy brings me her quilts, start quilting them. Fix the flying geese quilt

DONE 4. quilt Sandy's baby quilt

DONE 5. Quilt red and gold quilt

On-GOING 6. Work on the tessellation quilt.  this one take forever and I need it off my design wall soon!

DONE 7. De clutter at least one box - one bag

I did OK for it being a terrible weekend for emotions.  Problems at home again.  :(  I don't understand the trigger and don't understand why I let it get to me.  Anyway, I only have the long term projects of the Jo's Irish Chain and the Tessellation quilts.  Other than that, I accomplished my to do list.  I'm happy.

No more quilts ready to quilt.  Wish I had a couple others ready to go.  I guess I need to work on that, huh?

Tomorrow I need to make some appointments, pick up from quilting those quilts.  Floor always needs vacuuming after quilting a quilt.  I need to go through more bags and boxes and prepare for the applique class next month.  If I do it now, then it will be OK.

Long Arm quilting

I got the long arm to work well.  I quilted this cute little baby quilt for Sandy.  Not my creation, but it is sweet.  I added hearts to it
This is the one that was causing me trouble.  It is BIG!  Those flying geese are very large geese.
I was almost done when I had the machine problem.
So, I resewed the backing to get rid of the selvage.  I tried to sew the holes up, but I didn't like the way it looked, so I appliqued the pattern on the cur area.  Hopefully Sandy will be OK with what I did.
Sandy wanted loops, so I used a soft variegated thread that matches the border.

DONE 1. Applique block for class.

STARTED 2. Determine how I'm going to set these Jo's blocks. I might just need to make a couple of the Double Irish chain to see how it works. I'm really not sure, so I just need to do something. DONE 4. quilt Sandy's baby quilt

5. Quilt red and gold quilt
On-GOING 6. Work on the tessellation quilt

DONE 7. De clutter at least one box

8. Work on tessellation

I find that if I keep myself accountable I get more done.  I really want to get the red and gold quilt done and then start on my Double Irish chain.

Applique fun

I started this in class yesterday and today I had time where Randy was driving.  I had cut out some extra circles, and decided to add them to the flowers.  It was more complicated than the other blocks, but I like it and tried a few different things from what the pattern said.

No other sewing today.  Spent the morning helping DS work on his home.

Less Stress

I started my morning off REAL early.  I think I was troubleshooting the long arm issue all night long.  I rechecked all the areas and nothing seems out of sync.  Why did it do it?  I don't really know.  Was the needle plate shifted?  Was the backing seam deflecting the needle?  Was the needle coming loose from the housing?  Why, I may never know, but it seems to be working now.
So, the next step was to unsew the border.  I have the fabric needed to repair the rip and I have the quilting unsewn.  Oh how I hate to unsew.  :(

Then my friend Lorena and I went to our monthly applique lesson. We are doing the BOM for A Home in the Center (I think that is the name)  We got our fabric at class and I had all the pieces ready to put on the fabric and cut out.  I learned to do the bias strip -- see it on the right?  Can you tell what this is going to bee?  I still have more to go, but had fun doing this much.  Maria is such a fun teacher and I love the way she teaches.

Got home in time to get Ashley from Game Central and then ate dinner and watched Once Upon a Time on Netflix.

I'm feeling more hopeful that I can fix what happened on this quilt for Sandy.  Tomorrow I will redo her backing seam and take the selvage off.  I'll also piece the border where the broken needle ripped the fabric.  Wish there were a way to handle it without piecing a part in there.

Frustrating

well, I was getting this big quilt done for Sandy.  The day started with the bobbin winder not winding.  DH came and used his strength and got it to work.  Then, the bobbin would just spin, and he fixed that too.
I got the first and then 5 more bobbins wound during the day.  YES!  This is going great.
Then I left to get DD and when i came back I started quilting.  I was down to the last pass and about 1/3 of the way across it.  That's when the needle broke.  I've never broken a needle before.  Why now?  I have no idea.  I cleaned out the bobbin, checked the threading, put in another needle and it broke immediately.  :(  So, guess I got the timing off when the first one broke for whatever reason.
In the process I cut the quilt.  Thank goodness Sandy had leftover fabric and I can unsew some of the stitching and add in the new piece.  :(O
So, that has been my day.
I did do 3 stars for the America the Beautiful Purple Mountain majesty quilt.  need to do a couple more stars.
So, I think I will turn it off and figure this out tomorrow when I can fix it.

updated listing

OK, so we know I didn't finish everything this weekend, so I'll edit the list and keep track of what still needs done.

DONE 2. Work on applique of bird (that is in the car too, so it will be started.) Started it and had the wrong thread, so I took it all out and am starting again. I found the thread I need to use for this.  I finished this at horseback riding.

DONE 3. Get binding on the floral BOM quilt so I can start sewing it down in the evenings. I worked on this one in the car today. I have one more side to do.  Finished on way home from the commissary after dropping the kids at school

5. Stitch out some band pant labels and see how that works. I'm having troubles getting the designs to transfer, so I'll work with Vicki this week to figure out what is going wrong. Still trying to figure out how to get these to transfer to my machine.

STARTED 7. When I run out of those blocks, I will use the background fabric or determine an easier block to use. I doubt I will make more of these blocks.

STARTED 9. If Sandy brings me her quilts, start quilting them. I have one that I will load tomorrow to quilt for her. It is an all over design of quilting, so it should not take lots of time. After church should allow me to work on it. I hope.

On-GOING 10. Work on the tessellation quilt

Some progress

OK, so I've been doing some applique and binding today.
This is a BOM that I started to make sure I'm doing some applique.  I need to press it and put the border on it to get it ready for the next month.  :)

I finished the binding on this.  Not a good photo.  I'll try to do better tomorrow.  I saw this setting and loved it.  I actually think I didn't get the correct turning of the pieces, but I'm happy with it.  I'm not sure if it is going where I thought it would.

So, let's see, I think with all the family activities I had this weekend and time away from my studio, I think I did a great job at accomplishing something on each of the items. I still have things to finish, but I started to work on everything on my list.  I'm happy with my progress.

Update

My want to do for the weekend.  It's probably too much, but I gotta plan more than I can do, right?

DONE1.  Finish binding on last Christmas quilt (it is in the car, so that will happen while going to the movies)

10.  Work on the tessellation quilt

UFO #6c done

I finsihed the binding on our way to the movies.  As we pulled into the parking lot I was tieing off the knot.  It is ready to wash and have it ready for Christmas next year.  DS took the one he likes - the darker one.  So, I have 2 Christmas quilts for gifts next year.
The UFO challenge that Liz has going on had us doing UFO #6 and I got 3 quilts from it.  No wonder I take so long getting UFOs done.  Never only one on the list.

BOM for Lynne

OK, what happens when you are doing a simple block and thing you know what it should be placed as?
You don't turn the corner blocks the right direction and you get this block.
See the seam ripper right next to it?
That's right, I had to unstitch the corners and rotate them
Once you turn the corners the correct way, you get a beautiful Antique Tile block.
Hope Lynne likes this.  I had a cream on cream for the background, and it will be consistent.
I imagine the blue will go into more than one block.
the brown is a Jo Morton print with a little blue in it.

This is pretty.  I could see a complete quilt like this.

So, I went to get my flowered block and I have no idea what I did with it.  How could I misplace it so quickly?  I know it will turn up, but I was going to decorate my curtains with these fun BOM alphabet blocks.

The Weekend

Today is a half day of school.  Our tradition is to go to a movie after school is out.  Don't really have many options to choose from that are PG rated.

So, my sewing plans are limited because of other activities.
The weekend is full of other things too, but I should be able to get a little sewing time in.

Isn't this beautiful?  I did one of these at a retreat with Marge of Delaware Quilts. I have no idea where the photo went, but mine was of a countryside instead of a beach.  I have one of these started -- a beach one -- another UFO -- that I would like to work on.  I found it when I was looking for something else.  LOL

My BOM with Dorothy is also going to be a swap.  Maybe this will keep me committed and on task during each month.  Lynne and I are swapping, and we've known each other on-line for a long time.  Now we will be working together to make this 26 month project a little larger.  :()  My colors are floral with a green (not this one all the time) and a white on white background.  So, it is hopefully going to be like a garden.  I really don't like this pink fabric, but it was the first one that was large enough for this block.  It will look fine with all the other alphabet blocks, but  I can't wait to have more to tone it down some.  LOL
Lynne's will be more Jo Morton/thimbleberry colors.  I'm looking for a background to use to be consistent with during the 2 years.  As soon as I find that, I will be making her block.  We are shipping to each other every quarter, so that will make it exciting to have a gift in the mail.  Then we can see how it all is going together.  I'm excited to see the different florals from my scrap drawer mix with the scraps of green.  Will this help reduce those scraps and allow me room for more scraps to go in?  I sure do hope so.  I did the other BOM with floral scraps too, and didn't make a dent.  LOL

My want to do for the weekend.  It's probably too much, but I gotta plan more than I can do, right?
1.  Finish binding on last Christmas quilt (it is in the car, so that will happen while going to the movies)
2.  Work on applique of bird (that is in the car too, so it will be started.)
3.  Get binding on the floral BOM quilt so I can start sewing it down in the evenings.
4.  Find Lynne's background fabric and make the Antique Tiles block
5.  Stitch out some band pant labels and see how that works
6.  Stitch out embroidery for Jane's test blocks
7.  Determine how I'm going to set these Jo's blocks.  I might just need to make a couple of the Double Irish chain to see how it works.  I'm really not sure, so I just need to do something.  LOL
8.  Super clean and oil long arm.
9.  If Sandy brings me her quilts, start quilting them.
10.  Work on the tessellation quilt

So in-between movies, Equessence event, nail appointment and life, I plan on working on those things.

Charity will be happy

Well, I was going to quilt, but got a call for a donation next Friday. Told DH and he got a box ready and we both went into the closets.  :)
We are well over 300 items lighter and more space.  I still need to do my dresses.  I got tired of it all and that will have to wait until another day.
Feels good to get rid of those too big of clothes and too small of clothes that I don't want to get into again.
We seem to get requests for donations every couple of weeks.  They will be happy when they get this one.

America the Beautiful

This is one of the blocks for America the Beautiful quilt that our Sampler Society yahoo group is working on.  I still need to applique those stars on, but the main block is done.
I am so far behind on the schedule the group put out that I'll not get it accomplished in their time.  But, I will in my own time.  LOL
This will be fun with the applique.  I'll keep this by my chair and work on it when the family is all together watching something.

Christmas quilt photo

This one is a little bit smaller, but I love this border fabric.  I had so much of that green bear squares that they had to be alternated.
One more of these to bind.

Binding done

No photo today.  The second Christmas quilt is in the dryer.  Might have the photo tomorrow.  I hurt my shoulder, so I decided to take it easy and just sewed the binding on the second Christmas quilt.  I have the binding ready to sew on the 3rd Christmas quilt.  Maybe I can do that tonight or tomorrow morning.

I was going to the school tomorrow, but what I need to do will not be easy with my shoulder the way it is.  So, I will have to postpone it.  :(

I am working on getting the backing together for the BOM quilt.  I think it is going to need to be pieced.  :(  I don't think I will piece the batting this time because of my shoulder.  I'll wait to handle that size of pieced batting at a different time and day.

Want to see a young me in San Francisco?  That has to be 15 to 16 years ago.  LOL

Small Quilt Group

Spent some of today with a group of 3 other ladies.  Mostly folks were doing lots of cutting.  Lana had a mystery she was cutting out.  Then, she pulled this from what her Mom had been working on before she couldn't sew anymore.
:(  Some of the blocks were not the right size, so we had to come up with a different layout. But, she has enough fabric to finish this and have it done.  That will be wonderful for her.

Wanda is working on this pattern that I know as lone star.  She got lots done, 5 of the 8 parts.  Isn't it beautiful?
I was working on the Alphabet BOM that Dorothy is doing in the apocketfulofmysteries group.  I plan to use my big bin of flowered fabrics.  I want to add some green to each block too.  This is not a great color combination, but it is done.
A is for Antique Tiles
One of my other groups, The Sampler Society, had this BOM that was just squares and rectangles.  So, I did some of them, but not all.  I saw this setting style and decided it would be a fun one to do.  The blocks are really big once the border are added.  I was going to add a border to the outside, but I think this is large enough for the lady it is going to.  She is going through chemo and I want to make sure it isn't too large.  I'd like to get the backing put together and the batting ready to use.  Maybe I can get this one quilted tomorrow.

Saturday, January 12, 2013

What are you working on today?

Today is a quilt sew in today.

I have my list, and that is always so for those that know me.  LOL
1.  Christmas quilt borders, backing, batting, quilting
2.  Tessellation is a long term leader/ender project
3.  Cutting more 2.5" squares from baby clothing.  Can't wait to actually have enough to sew together.  I want a variety before I start that process to keep from having the same ones always next to each other.

Tomorrow is my small quilt group.  I pray I can make it there for some of the day.

I can take the cookie order form with me.  LOL  Need to sell those cookies.

Liz UFO #.6 completed

Photo of the UFO #6 Christmas quilt.  I have the binding on the second one and will be putting borders on the third one.  Not great photo, but I like the green and blue on this one.  I had one of these started and then all these other squares sitting in the same box.  It made 3, and I started these at least 10 years ago

Friday, January 11, 2013

Christmas binding done

I finished Liz's UFO#6 binding tonight,  I don't have the photo yet.  Quilt is downstairs and camera was upstairs.  Tomorrow I'll post the photo of the first one.  The second binding is ready to go.  I still need borders on the third Christmas quilt for UFO#6.

I was at the school today, so I didn't actually sew much at all.

Thursday, January 10, 2013

No sewing today

I needed a pretty photo today.  I didn't touch my machine today, even though I have lots to do.  I did some binding on a quilt while DH drove.  Need about half more to go.  I'll work on it tomorrow while I wait at an appointment.
This is the grand canyon from our trip this summer.
Maybe I'll finish the Christmas quilt tomorrow.  That will be finishing one of Liz's UFO listing challenge.

Turtle applique is done

Finished putting on the binding for the Turtle Applique.  This is my first complete project.  It is hanging in my bathroom.  Now to get some more done to decorate other walls.
I'm enjoying this process.
Nothing else accomplished today.  Very stressful day, so I should have done something to calm things.

America the Beautiful

Another group is working on the quilt America the Beautiful.  I hope to be able to work through this during the year.  It seems to have lots of pieces, but will be beautiful when it is done.  Instead of working on Section A, I started on Section B.  LOL  Leave it to me to do it differently.

I started the hand stitching of the binding on the Turtle applique.

I got the binding sewn on 2 of the Christmas quilts and they are ready to hand stitch.

It's been a productive day.

Uncle Dick's quilt

Not the best photo, but this is Marge's NYE Mystery that I made for my Uncle Dick.  I can't say the colors are what I like, but I had the jelly roll.  I started it last year, and left it a day, so it squeaks by as a UFO.  LOL  I did have to buy the backing because I didn't want a fully pieced backing for this quilt.  Everything else was from the stash.  Even the batting was sewn together to make a larger piece.  I am making progress, even if it is slow on that batting.  I do need to figure out what to do with the smaller sizes.

I'm working on squaring up the 2 Christmas quilts and putting borders on the 3rd.  That is if this cedar allergy allows me to keep my eyes open.

One step at a time

Uncle Dick's quilt is done, and in the washer.  When it is out, I'll take a photo of it.  This is the second Christmas 6" block quilt that I'm quilting today.  the batting for both of them came from the pile of batting over to the right.
My room is a mess.  Gets messier when I'm doing something.  I wish my desk would stay clean, but that never seems to happen.
I am excited for all that I've accomplished so far.

Turtle Applique

Well, I don't want to post the photo until I'm done with the binding.  I did lots of intricate quilting on the Turtle applique wall hanging.  I hope this one goes in my bathroom for decoration.
I'm pleased with it, and learned some things on the quilting aspect.
Hoping to have it bound in the next day or two.

Uncle Dick's label is ready to sew on too, so that photo will be coming soon.

Using Firefox will let me upload photos

Seems that Firefox will let me upload photos, but not Internet explorer.  DS is trying to fix it for me.

this is my Jo's Club UFO I finally finished.  I noticed that the pinwheels are not turning all the same direction.  :()

The baby quilt for the high risk pregnancy clinic at Brooke Army Medical Center.  This is another UFO
Notice the left side has the 3 rows sewn together in columns. That's 1/4 of the quilt.  This is a long term UFO that I need done so I can get my design wall back.

Two Troll pillowcases I started, but didn't finish for some reason.  Why?  Who were they meant for?????

Problems with photo loading

If you have an idea how to get it so I can upload photos again, please let me know.  There isn't a way to browse photos to get one loaded.  :(

I did finish the binding on Uncle Dick's quilt, and Vicki digitized the label for me, so now to get the label stitched out and sewn on the quilt.  It should be able to be mailed on Monday.  :)

Oh, I also cut some more of the baby clothing quilt.  That is a long term project.  I hope to use my 15 minutes a day to cut.  I have 2 large bins of those clothes already cut apart.

I am also working on the Christmas quilts.  Need one more border on one of them and then I can load it.

Then I'll need borders on the other 2.

2 UFOs done

I wish I could get the photo option on this blog to work.  :(
I finished 2 UFOs
One was a small 4 patch baby quilt that will go to BAMC High Risk Pregnancy ward.
One is a Jo's Club challenge that is in purple instead of patriotic.
I have one ready to load and quilt tomorrow.
I have 3 Christmas square quilts that need borders.

More sewing

I spent today sewing.  Didn't finish anything, but lots of progress.
I have binding to do on 2 quilts.
I can't get photos added tonight, so I'll just describe them
Jo's club purple quilt is ready for binding.
A baby quilt for BAMC High Risk Pregnancy ward is ready for binding.
I have 3 Christmas quilts from the 6" squares,  I need to add borders to those 3.
I got the borders added to Uncle Dick's quilt that is Fabricaholic's NYE Mystery.
I'm making progress, just need to finish them off.  Maybe a road trip tomorrow.

New Years Day

Marge Gordon of Delaware Quilts had this mystery.  As I look at it, I see a couple of turned blocks.  Might have to fix that before I border it.  Not sure what I am going to use as a border since this was from jelly rolls.

One of the groups had us list 9 projects we wanted to finish this year.  We listed them, and she pulls the number for the project we are to work on in the month.  Liz chose #6 for January.  So, I pulled the 6" squares and laid them out.  I used it as a leader/ender project while working on the NYE Mystery.  I need a small inner border and a larger border for this to be ready to quilt.  Of course, I didn't use all the blocks in my box, so I am going to see if I can make another one.  Then, I will have 2 Christmas gifts from 1 listing on my UFO list.

Hope everyone had a Great First day of the year.  We had fun with family.

Happy New Year!

New Years Eve for me was some sewing, some cleaning, lots of watching DD dancing to Just Dance on the Xbox and eating good food.

I'm going to embarrass myself here and copy my list of UFOs to this page.  Maybe that will help me to finish up more than I have in the past, though I do work on them.  The problem is I don't like these as much as I did some of the others AND they take more work to finish.

133. Lorena Disappearing 9 patches (Purple and black)

So, this is really embarrassing to think I have this much stuff started and still started Marge's NYE Mystery quilt.

How do I plan to get more of these done and less added to my list next year?  I plan to check the UFO cabinet first when I need a gift and consistently work on getting them completed.

This is what is on my design wall.  It has been a DIP (Dream in Progress).  It is so complicated that I get frustrated with it.  I can't chain piece, and anyone that knows me knows that I love to chain piece.  So, I need my design wall back and want this done.  So a group is doing a DIP challenge and I am working on this one first.  The other challenge is to get the mess away from the design wall.

I will be charting my progress and hoping to accomplish lots this year.

As soon as I get more of the room cleaned up that I can take photos of things (won't be perfect, but not quite as bad as before) I will post my sewing area/studio.
